When I say princess, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it a Disney Princess like Cinderella, Aurora, or my favorite, Ariel? Or is it more royal like Princess Diana or Princess Kate Middleton? Or is your first thought Marwa - PuzzledPrincessDiaries on Instagram? Well, whether you think of me, Disney, or royalty, you are not wrong! We’re all princesses!
Although, through the magic of puzzles, I would like to dedicate this blog to not only Disney princesses because they continue to spread joy across the globe, but also to non-traditional types of princesses. A princess doesn’t have to wear a crown. She can be an athlete, a ballerina, or a princess gone villain. She can also be human, sea creature, white, black, or Asian! A princess doesn’t have to be one type of woman. She can be anything she wants to be! As leaves change colors and the temperatures get a little more manageable in the eastern United States, I always find myself wanting to spend more time outside. I’ll start with a confession.
In over 50 years of solving jigsaw puzzles, I had never, until last year, heard of something called an “Advent puzzle.” November of 2023 was the first time one of these came to my attention, when it showed up in my house as a present from my wife. She bought it as a novelty, and its slower pace was definitely a change from my usual “get this finished quickly” style. So, starting on Dec 1 and for the following 23 days, I worked my way through the box, one 42 piece puzzle at a time. Thanks to my Mom’s love of early American decorating and design, I grew up a big fan of painter Charles Wysocki and my large (and still growing!) shelf space devoted to Wysocki puzzles is a testament to that. Obviously, there are a lot of us out there, with Facebook groups for his fans to sell and swap items, an annual calendar, and the fine folks at Buffalo Games regularly releasing new puzzles. With Halloween gone and Thanksgiving right around the corner, who can even think about more candy. ME!!! I’m not the only one, because there is a day dedicated to candy. It’s National Candy Day which is held on November 4th each year.
It’s hard to imagine that when candy first came to America, only the wealthy could access it. I mean can you imagine not being able to satisfy your sweet tooth? I read a little about this day dedicated to all those candy cravers on National Today’s website. October 27th is National Black Cat Day, a day dedicated to celebrating black cats in the hopes that more of you will bring one home from a shelter, as almost twice as many are left there compared to other tabbies. This is because many consider them to be unlucky, or even, as Pope Gregory IX declared back in 1233, demonic. When my mother’s Assisted Care Home went to a shelter to get a cat, I was thrilled when she came home with and rescued a black cat. My mom’s main caregiver…not so much. Poor Whiskey frightened her at first, but I’m happy to report he has won her over, as he truly is the sweetest cat! Maybe one will win you over too?!...CONTINUE READING

Have you ever puzzled with a friend or family member who are normally not a puzzler? For me, I always feel like I’m taking over. To be honest, I don’t puzzle well with others cause I can’t seem to hold back. Over the past year, I’ve discovered Family style puzzles which I think is a great solution for those who want to puzzle with others, but there are different experience levels.
A few brands now make family style puzzles and the concept is pretty genius. These puzzles tend to be in the 300-400 piece range. What’s unique about them is that they have three sizes of pieces, located on three areas of the puzzle. They have jumbo sized pieces on one end, medium sized pieces in the middle and regular sized pieces on the other end.
