What Is Competitive Puzzling?
When most people think of puzzling, they picture a quiet night in, maybe a cup of tea, a cat knocking pieces on the floor — not a race to see who can finish a puzzle the fastest. But yes, competitive puzzling is absolutely a thing. And not only that — it’s growing fast!

I've had the chance to experience it firsthand. I’ve competed in the U.S. Nationals the past two years (and made the finals both times), and last year, I traveled to Valladolid, Spain to take part in the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship. While I definitely don’t consider myself a true speed puzzler like some of the elite competitors out there, I go for the thrill, the people, and the community vibe — and there’s nothing like the adrenaline rush of flipping over that first piece and diving in.

How Does a Puzzle Competition Work?
- Individual Events: One person gets a puzzle (usually 500 pieces) and races the clock — and everyone else — to finish first. Time limits vary, but most people are shocked how fast these top puzzlers go. We’re talking 30–40 minutes… or less.
- Pairs and Teams: Duos or teams of 3–4 people work together on one or more puzzles. Strategy is key here — from sorting roles to section building and piece sharing.
- Nationals & Worlds: The U.S. Nationals are held annually and is hosted by the USA Jigsaw Puzzle Association. The World Championship is hosted by the World Jigsaw Puzzle Federation and has drawn competitors from over 40 countries!

It’s Not Just About Speed
Yes, there’s pressure, and yes, there’s competition — but what really makes these events special is the community. You meet people from all over the country (and world) who share your love of puzzling. Whether you're placing in the top 10 or finishing just under the buzzer, you’re part of something incredibly fun and welcoming.
Plus, even if you’re not competing, it’s amazing to watch. You’ll never look at a 500-piece puzzle the same way again after seeing someone complete it in under 30 minutes. It’s part strategy, part muscle memory, part mental focus — and it’s fascinating.

Want to Try It?
If you’re curious, I say go for it. More and more local events are popping up, and it’s a great way to dip your toes into the competitive side of puzzling. One to check out is Puzzle Palooza — a fun, beginner-friendly event hosted right here at Puzzle Warehouse. It’s all about fast puzzling, good vibes, and meeting fellow puzzle lovers.

Whether you're racing the clock or casually sorting your way through a puzzle on a weekend morning, puzzling has room for everyone. And that’s what makes this hobby so great.
